First visit to Africa: Katy Perry joins UNICEF

SHE'S a million miles away from her normal life.
Katy Perry has swapped the bright lights of Hollywood for the slums of Africa.

The Fireworks singer joined UNICEF this week as she visited troubled children in Madagascar and was shocked to discover the real poverty in the country.

Katy said: "In less than one week here in Madagascar, I went from crowded city slums to the most remote villages and my eyes were widely opened by the incredible need for a healthy life – nutrition, sanitation, and protection against rape and abuse." 

Katy - who wore her hair back in a bun with a patterned head band - became very involved in the trip as she joined the children in their games.
