UNILAG Students Close Down Retail Outlets On Campus Over Escalating Commodity Prices
The protest, which began Sunday with students marching round to warn the shop operators that the inflation was unacceptable to them, added action to the words today by closing down all commercial outlets in the halls and hostels.
The action, which was carried out by leaders of the faculties and their executives accompanied by security and guards on campus, attracted the Directorate of Students Affairs, which caused an SMS to be circulated to all students clarifying that all shops would remain closed down until the issues raised by the students are addressed. Circulars warning operators of the outlets have also been pasted on all the shops that were shut down.
As a result of the situation, the students have started to patronise canteens outside the around town. One student who spoke to Saharareporters said he was in a canteen at the Federal College of Education on Finbarrs Street, close to the university campus, to buy food.
Saharareporters also learned that a meeting has been arranged to address the issue. One canteen operator at Mariere Hall complained that the food they prepared for the day might go bad if the closure order was not immediately reversed.
Only recently, cab operators operating on the campus were also compelled to reduce travel fares in the area.
