Wayne Rooney's Manchester United future needs to be decided by the end of the week

His future has been the subject of great debate in recent times with the suggestion that he could be used as a bargaining tool to try and re-sign Cristiano RonaldoReal Madrid or passed on to another Premier League giant.

Either way we'll find out this week because Rooney is returning from holiday and it won't be too long until David Moyes is on the phone asking him to go to Old Trafford for a meeting or two.

It was clear Rooney had big issues with the way Sir Alex Ferguson was using him last season, missing out on a couple of big matches which made Rooney question his position at the club.

However, Fergie has since retired and Moyes seems determined to give the club the best possible chance of hanging onto one of their best players.

Rooney can, and will, play as a central striker if he stays at the club because there is no need for him to dip back into midfield areas under the new regime of Moyes.

Ferguson's departure from the game seems to have created a fresh window of opportunity for Rooney because the great manager retiring seems to have removed the greatest threat in terms of Rooney wanting to leave the club.

Moyes would be well advised to try and get the situation sorted out clearly this week, before the transfer window opens next Monday which could see some big clubs making some very official formal offers for the striker.

It's also very important for Rooney to get this situation sorted out and under control this week because he has a relationship to re-build with the fans.

There will still be a section of United supporters who would rather the club now moved him on following two reported transfer requests, simply replacing him with a more committed and just as effective high profile striker.

One of the great things about Rooney's game has always been his passion and desire, regardless of anything that is going on in his life away from the football pitch, and that's something which will never change.

It's arguably the club's biggest reason to keep him, especially heading into a season where Chelsea and Manchester City are tooling up for a title push and Arsene Wenger finally has a big pot of cash to spend down in London.

It should be a relatively straight forward meeting for Moyes because Rooney either wants to stay at the club and try again or his views about moving on won't have changed.

Either way it's important for United to get an answer by Friday but things will look much brighter if they get him to stay.
