Channel swimmer dies just a mile from finish
Susan Taylor was less than a mile from the French coastline.
The accountant, 34, had a suspected heart attack after swimming for more than 14 hours.
Husband Stephen looked on helpless from a boat as she was dragged out of the water by her paramedic brother, who tried to save her life.
Her dad Arthur Wright said he had lost "the best person in the whole world".
He added: "I'm devastated. She was just wonderful."
Susan was raising money for Rainbow's Hospice in Loughborough, Leicestershire, and Diabetes UK.
She was flown by French Navy helicopter to medics in nearby Boulogne on Sunday. Police said that Susan was "well supported".
Mr Wright saw her on Friday night.
He said: "I saw her to say I hope it goes well and gave her a kiss." He said Susan had given up her full-time job to carry out charitable work and was a part-time accountant.
She had tried wing-walking and a parachute jump, and was a qualified rally driver. He added: "She was certainly not a boring accountant."
