On this day: Bale blasts 'coward' Adam while Cole rumour becomes silliest of 2012

On the 29th July 2012 what were the stories that dominated the football landscape? Including Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool, West Ham, Fulham and Wigan.

With transfer rumours and gossip galore revolving around the likes of Fabregas, Suarez, Bale Rooney, and pretty much everyone who is anyone, sometimes it is nice to take a break from it all.

So to do so, I am casting back to this exact day, the 26th July 2013, but a year earlier.

What were the main transfer tales from that day? What big events were happening in Premier League football?

Here are some of the big scoops from the 29th July 2012…

Cole in one?

It was possibly the most ridiculous transfer rumour of 2012 - the suggestion that Chelsea left-back Ashley Cole could be on his way to Manchester United.

No doubt many a football follower, picked up their Sunday paper and spat out their coffee, when they read a story that had them doubting the date… is it April the 1st? I don't think it is? Is it?

The idea Cole could move on was not so far-fetched. His contract expired at the end of the season and, at the time, no talks had been opened up with the England international - but most of us were in agreement.

Cole to United was a no-go.

Cowardly Adam walks the red Bale road

Gareth Bale was in the headlines for very different reasons this time last year - laying into then Liverpool midfielder Charlie Adam for his ugly tackle on him in pre-season.

A year earlier and Adam had side-lined Bale for three months with a similarly reckless challenge - and it had Bale in a strop:

''There are pictures on the internet of what he did before when he snapped all my ankle ligaments. I was out for three months that time and one player told me he went out to do the same thing to me again. From what I've seen of him on pitch, I think he's a bit of a coward. I haven't had an apology from him or anything like that. But I don't really want one from him, to be honest. That's what kind of person he is like. He's done it before. I'm not going to accept his apology.''

And the injury seemed to really hold Bale back - the following season he only managed to sweep the awards at the PFA Ceremony and earn himself a £100 million valuation.

Mousa have a Modric replacement

It was on this day that Tottenham first found themselves strongly linked with Fulham midfielder Mousa Dembele.

With the club preparing to sell Luka Modric midfield reinforcements were necessary - and the Belgian was lined up as the perfect candidate.

A month later - on the 29th August - Dembele was a Spurs player.

Also in the news that day ….

- Liverpool reportedly 'edged closer' to buying Gaston Ramirez … who went on to sign for Southampton.

- West Ham 'signed' Ivan Ramis … who went on to sign for Wigan Athletic later the same day.

- Liverpool flop Alberto Aquillani's agent stated a move to Fiorentina was 'impossible' … he went on to sign for Fiorentina a few days later.
