IG Lists Factors Restraining Successful Fight Against Corruption

The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Mohammed Abubakar on Wednesday blamed inadequate funding and political interference as key factors inhibiting the successful fight against corruption in the country.

Abubakar added that it has become a difficult terrain for security operatives who have to sustain the fight against corruption and make critical arrests with meagre salaries.

The police chief made this disclosure at the maiden edition of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Law Report in Abuja.

Some legal practitioners present at the event, also urged the government to impose an anti-corruption levy on all current account holders in the country to ease the problem of funding in anti-graft agencies.

The lawyers blamed the actions of political office holders and security operatives for the poor rating by Transparency International, global civil society organisation leading the fight against corruption.

The agency in 2012 ranked Nigeria as the 139th most corrupt country in the world.

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Abiodun Layonu called on the federal government to empower the anti-graft agencies through better funding.

Chairman of the ICPC, Mr Nta Ekpo also called for the improvement of the conditions of security operatives in the country.
