Man Docked for Gang Rape, Robbery in Ibadan

Ibadan Chief Magistrate's Court, sitting in Iyaganku, on August 16, 2013, remanded in prison custody the defendant, Earnest Michel, 21, for alleged rape and robbery.

The side of the prosecution was presented by Insp. Aliu Samad. The Prosecutor told the court that the defendant was arraigned on a 10-count charge which included unlawful carnal knowledge, forceful entry, armed robbery and stealing.

Insp. Samad further said that Earnest Michel committed the crime on July 24 and July 26 at Sango-Polytechnic road in Ibadan.

The Prosecutor said the defendant with two others already in prison raped a 31-year-old woman, Taiwo Owoade.

He said Michel and his gang also robbed Ayodeji Egunjobi and Yekini Ayanniyi of laptop computers and cell phones valued at N775,000.

According to Insp. Samad, the offences contravened sections 516, 358, 6 (b) (1) (2), 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Cap 38 Vol II Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.

The defendant's plea was, however, not taken.

Chief Magistrate Olaide Amzat ordered Michel to be remanded in Agodi Prison while the case file should be duplicated and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal advice.

The case has been adjourned to August 29 for further hearing.
