Adebayor asks for £1m payoff to leave Tottenham

The Togolese forward has slipped down Andre Villas-Boas' preferences and is supposedly eager to leave White Hart Lane as a result.

Reports in the British media are suggesting that Tottenham fringe forward Emmanuel Adebayor is ready to leave the club and wants a £1 million pay-out to cancel his contract.

The African forward is now third-choice centre forward following the summer arrival of Roberto Soldado from Valencia, while Jermain Defoe is also ahead of him in the pecking order.

The ex-Manchester City striker has been sent to train with the reserves following compassionate leave, and is seemingly not in Andre Villas-Boas' plans for the near future.

With Adebayor thought to be one of the club's top earners, making £100,000 per week, he is a costly reserve. He still has two years left on his current contract and as such will sting the north London club to the sum of much more than the £1 million handout being reported.

If there is any truth in the story, Tottenham would be wise to seriously consider this option. Adebayor was linked to Schalke and Besiktas, amongst others over the summer, but was reluctant to leave White Hart Lane.

There is no shortage of suitors for the African attacker, however there are very few that are willing or able to match the striker's current wages. As such, Adebayor is unlikely to take a pay cut or leave the club any time soon.

To pay him the equivalent of ten week's salary to get him off the wage bill might not be a bad move. It would potentially suit both parties – Spurs would be saving a substantial amount of money per week on a player that is not playing for the first-team anyway, and Adebayor is free to pursue a lucrative payday elsewhere in the Middle East or wherever.

Another consideration is that the Togo international has a reputation for being a rotten apple, and training with the reserves is not going to be a source of pride for him. With things going well for Tottenham currently, they do not need a disruptive influence at the club.

When fit and on form Adebayor has shown that he can be a mightily effective frontman and he still has the ability to be an asset for Tottenham. However, if he is going to just rot away in the reserves and cost the club a monumental amount of money in wages, the £1 million hit is worth it.

What should Spurs do? Persist with Adebayor or pay him £1 million and send him packing?
