Officials have announced death of Solomon Lar, the first civilian governor of Plateau state, and pioneer national chairman for the Peoples' Democratic Party (PDP).

The incumbent governor of Plateau state, Jonah Jang, said Mr. Lar passed away in a U.S. hospital, at about 9 am Nigerian time.

For the past nine months, Chief Solomon Lar had been receiving medical treatment in the U.S., and lapsed into coma in his last 48 hours.

This June, he made his last trip to Nigeria to support President Jonathan's second term bid.

Chief (Dr.) Solomon Daushep Lar was born in Pongaa, Langtang, Plateau State in 1933, and will always be remembered as a prominent politician who held various offices at the National level for over half a century.
