Man Claims To Be Jonathan's Aide, Tries Extort Money From Ogun Chief

On Monday, Ogun State police arrested a 50-year-old man who falsely claimed to be Aide-de-camp to President Goodluck Jonathan and attempted to extort money from a traditional ruler in the town of Agbado.

Hassan Ayinde approached Adedayo Shyllum, the traditional ruler of Agbado, claiming to be an army colonel, and tried to convince him of his role in the Presidency. He tried to solicit money to purchase ram for the Eid-el-Kabir celebration.

However, the monarch suspected foul play and informed the police.

The man, allegedly from Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State, was interrogated by the police and later arrested. According to the spokesperson for the Ogun State police force, the suspect claims to be a dismissed Air Force officer trying to make ends meet.

He says to have attended a military school in 1979, and posted to Zuru Kebbi State as last corporal. Later, he attended the Nigeria Defence Academy and passed out in 1985. In 1997, the suspect said he worked with the Presidency only to be dismissed in 1999 as a Wing Commander.

Moreover, the suspect has falsely claimed to be residing at the National Defence College.

Muyiwa Adejobi, Ogun State Police Command Public Relations Officer, confirmed the case, saying, "He is cooling his feet in our custody and will be charged to court at the end of our investigation."

The command appealed to the general public to beware of such fraudsters who may want to dupe them of their earnings, and always contact the police whenever they are in doubt.
