Two arrested in Ogun for vandalising Globacom mast

Suspects may have connived with staff of the company.
Two vandals have been arrested in Abeokuta, Ogun State by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, for allegedly tampering with a Globacom mast and siphoning petroleum products belonging to the company at Obantoko, Odeda Local Government Area.

The two suspects, Bidemi Oyewole (33), Oloyede Sarafa (30), were arrested following a tip off during the robbery.

According to several sources, the suspects had successfully tampered with the mast and stolen the diesel used in powering the facility when they were caught by NSCDC officials.
However, one of the suspects, Mr. Oyewole, while responding to the allegation, said the gang had been conniving with some site officials from Globacom to carry out such acts.
The second suspect, Mr. Sarafa, lamented that he was lured into the crime, and attributed his involvement to the devil.
Telecommunication installations nationwide were among the infrastructure that the civil defence was recently directed by the Federal Government to safeguard in line with the NSCDC Act of 2003 as amended in 2007.
In compliance with the directive, the NSCDC, Ogun State command deployed its officers to all critical infrastructures and government assets in the state.
When contacted, the Command Public Relations Officer, Kareem Olanrewaju, confirmed the incident, stressing that vandalism, in whatever form, was against the law.
Mr. Olanrewaju noted that, the suspects' actions were capable of disrupting communications and amounted to a sabotage of government efforts at improving the state of such infrastructures nationwide.
The civil defence spokesperson said that a full investigation would commence immediately to determine the level of culpability of the two suspects and other accomplices. He said the suspects would soon appear in court.
Meanwhile, exhibits recovered from the suspects include some kegs filled with diesel, a hose and other tools.
