Moyes: Rooney can become Man United’s record
The Red Devils have struggled this season but the England striker has been in sparkling form as he closes in on Sir Bobby Charlton's goal record.
The 28-year-old will make his 500th appearance against Aston Villa on Saturday and has 207 goals to his name, 42 short of the 1966 World Cup winner's total.
And Moyes believes it is within Rooney's grasp to beat that target in the coming years.
""There are some big targets ahead for Wayne. Can he break Bobby Charlton's goalscoring record?" said the United boss.
"There are some fantastic legends around this club and Wayne has got a chance to be one of them. He already is with what he does but I am talking real top status.
"Those targets are not too far away if he keeps playing the way he is now. If he does I am sure he will get there because he is that good."
While the former Everton manager reckons Rooney can overcome those targets he doubts he will ever topple Ryan Giggs' 'inhuman' tally of 952 appearances, and counting, for the club.
"Wayne is a boy who will play for a long time.He can go far in terms of numbers because as he gets older he is adaptable and such a good football player," he added.
"Maybe if he gets older and loses a bit of his pace he can always drop a bit deeper and play deeper.
"Whether he reaches Giggs' total is a different thing thing because that is nearly inhuman."
