Ogun to build standard cancer centre

The Ogun State Government said it was embarking on the construction of a world-class cancer centre in furtherance of its efforts at making qualitative health services available to the people.

The Commissioner for Health, Olaokun Soyinka, made this known at the 2014 budget defence exercise before members of the State House of Assembly.

He said his Ministry was proposing to spend N5.2 billion in the next fiscal year and gave the breakdown as N4.1 billion for capital projects, and N1.18 billion for recurrent expenditure.

He explained that out of N4.1 billion allocated for the execution of capital projects, N2.5 billion would be spent on construction and provision of hospitals and health centres throughout the State.

Mr. Soyinka disclosed that N1.7 billion had been set aside for the building of the cancer centre, N180 million for the construction of six ambulance points across the state, and N300 million for public health laboratories.

He said that 100 health centres across the state would be renovated and the state would continue to pay its counterpart funding in the area of tuberculosis, leprosy control, malaria and HIV/AIDs programmes.

While presenting the 2014 budget estimate of the State Hospitals Management Board, the Commissioner said N6.2 billion would be spent by the Board in the coming year.

He said N3.7 billion would be expended on capital projects, while recurrent matters – including personnel and overhead costs – would gulp N2.5 billion, with N20 million as revenue target.

He disclosed that the Board planned to build one maternal and child hospital in each Senatorial District, embark on the expansion of the dental clinic at Ijebu-Igbo and the psychiatric hospital at Ijebu-Ode.
