Amodu: Orlando Pirates, Okala lament

South African powerhouse Orlando Pirates spoken of their  sadness at the death of their erstwhile  manager Shaibu Amodu.

 The former Super Eagles coach died in his sleep in Benin on Saturday at 58.

Amodu, who replaced Dutchman Clemens Westerhof as Nigeria manager  after the USA ’94 World Cup,  journeyed to South Africa to manage Orlando Pirates from 1997 to 1998 — after he sacked  by the Nigeria Football  Federation after guiding to  Nigeria  to fourth place finish at the 1995 King Fahd Cup (now renamed FIFA Confederations Cup).

Orlando Pirates  offered condolences to the family of the former BCC Lions coach over his passing.

“Orlando Pirates management and the extended Bucs family would like to extend its heartfelt condolences to the family of Shaibu Amodu who has passed away,” the  1995 CAF Champions League champions wrote on their official website.

“Though from Nigeria, Amodu was  no stranger to South Africa having been an assistant coach and then a head coach of the Mighty Buccaneers in the late 90s.

“We convey our heartfelt and deepest sympathy to the Amodu family and pledge our profound moral support. We supplicate that God gives you fortitude at this moment of your extreme grief and pain.”

Meanwhile, former Nigeria  goalkeeper Emmanuel Okala says  he is  devastated and heartbroken by Amodu’s passing.

“I am worried about what is happening, just as we are coming to terms with  Stephen Keshi’s death, Amodu died,” the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations winner was quoted by the News Agency  of Nigeria as saying.

“It is painful that we are losing a generation in our football history so soon and within a short period.”

The former Enugu Rangers custodian  urged the Nigeria Football Federation  to prioritise the welfare of ex-players and coaches.

He added, “How can we replace two  giants of  Nigerian football — Keshi and Amodu — who passed on just within few days intervals?

“Look at the hardworking Amodu, I am sure that the NFF is till owing him some allowances.

“I know that those people, who failed to give him what was due to him while he was alive are now pouring encomiums on him. This is regrettable.”

“In other countries, heroes and legends are celebrated for life; just like the case of  Mohammad Ali.”
