Chinese in court for illegal importation of wood
A Chinese, Zhu Jinxin, who allegedly tried to export some logs of wood to China, was on Monday granted N10m bail by a Federal High Court in Lagos.
Justice Rabiu Shagari added that Jinxin must provide two sureties in like sum as part of the bail condition.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Shagari ordered that the sureties must be civil servants and must show evidence of tax payment.
The accused, who resides at Akura Estate, off Adeniyi Jones Street in Ikeja, Lagos, is facing a charge of unlawful exportation of wood.
Jinxin had, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecutor, Mr. Ajakaye Iyiola, told the court that the accused committed the offence on November 16, 2015, at the Tin-Can Port, Lagos.
He was alleged to have brought several logs of wood in a container with number, MOAU 0066913/9, for the purpose of exporting them to China.
The container was alleged to have been seized by the Nigeria Customs Service.
The prosecutor stated that the offence contravened Section 64(1)(b) of the Customs and Excise Management Act, Cap C45, Law of the Federation, 2004.
Shagari adjourned the case till October 4, 2016, for trial.
