The Independent National Electoral Commission has employed an ex-corps member, Daniel Oluwatobi, who lost his sight in an accident while serving as an ad hoc staff member during the 2011 general elections in Yobe State.
Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said in a statement that Oluwatobi was given his employment letter at the National Youth Service Corps headquarters.
Yakubu commended Oluwatobi for his patriotism, dedication and commitment to election duties.
“There is no way we can have a successful election without this crop of dedicated staff. Oluwatobi was part of our most committed, patriotic and non-partisan election duty staff,” he said.
Several corps members had in times past been attacked and injured, while some others had lost their lives, while serving as ad hoc staff members of INEC in the country’s general elections.
It will be recalled that a corps member, Samuel Okonta, lost his life during the 2015 elections in Rivers State.
Yakubu said he had promised to offer automatic employment to Oluwatobi and post him to any state of his choice.
“Today, we are fulfilling that promise. Oluwatobi has requested to be posted to Ogun State, and to Ogun State he has now been posted,” he said.
