A man suspected to be a member of a secret cult simply identified as Maxiwell was killed during a clash that ensued between two cultists groups at Ijemikin Street, Akure, the Ondo State capital.
According to a source, the deceased, who is said to be one of the leaders of his own group, was killed by members of the other group to avenge the killing of their own member last week.
The source said, “The man was drinking at a beer palour at about 10pm on Monday when somebody called him out, not knowing that his attackers were waiting for him outside.
“Immediately he stepped out of the beer palour, the attackers pounced on him, stabbed him several times while one of them brought out a gun and shot him.”
The source added that there was nobody to rescue the deceased from the assailants because immediately they started beating him, they were shooting sporadically into the air to scare people away.
He said, “There was no security agent in the area when the incident happened. It was after the hoodlums had left the scene that policemen came to take the corpse away.”
The Police Public Relations Office in the state, Mr. Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident. He described the deceased as a notorious cult leader.
Joseph said, “At about 9.30pm on that day, when we got the information that the cults were fighting, our men moved in and found the lifeless body of a man on the ground in the pool of his blood. We searched his body and we saw his identity card.”
The police spokesperson, however, said nobody had been arrested in connection with the murder.
