Researcher advises schools, pupils on science

Charles Abah

A Research fellow at the Federal Institute of Industrial Research, Oshodi, Lagos State, Dr. Sakirudeen Ajani, has urged schools to endeavour to encourage their pupils to embrace science education.
Ajani made the appeal on the sidelines of this year’s  Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fair titled Awakening Creativity, which held at the Greensprings School, Anthony Village, Lagos.
According to him, initiatives, such as STEM can offer the leeway to solving the nation’s technological challenges.
The researcher, who is the Head, Packaging Technology Division of FIIRO, had earlier urged stakeholders to support science education, noting that it was relevant to technological development.
Speaking on the topic, Gap to Fill, Ajani also urged the pupils to pay greater attention to science education in order that they could help to solve socio-economic challenges facing humanity.
He added, “You must think of how to fill the scientific gaps and break bounds in our society. You have to do this fast because of the quality education you are receiving and the expectations from the society.”
The Head of the school, Helen Brocklesby, also advised the pupils to study sciences as well as show interest in research.
With such commitment, she noted, they would contribute to creating a safer environment, especially with modifications occasioned by climate change.
One of the school’s science Coordinators, Mrs. Sonia Ivie, who spoke to our correspondent, explained that the objective of the fair was to stimulate the pupils’ interest in science.
She added, “Whatever concepts that these pupils display at this fair are their creation. Apart from teaching them science and technology, we are also providing them the opportunity to apply the scientific and technological skills they have acquired.”
