We need to know what happened to our murdered son – Family of corps member found dead on Lagos roadside

The case of 22-year-old national youth corps member, Ifiemi Igali, a graduate of the Niger Delta University, Amassoma, Bayelsa State, has continued to perplex his family. They have therefore demanded explanation on how he could have ended up dead on the side of a road in Lagos.
According to Igali’s sister, who first shared the tragic news on Facebook, Igali, a Batch A corps member just posted to Benue State, told his family that he was travelling to his school, NDU, in Bayelsa but was curiously found dead very far from home.
How he ended up in Lagos along with some curious activities on his social media account has made the family to conclude that he was murdered possibly for some sensitive information he might have posted online.
The deceased’s aunty said Igali’s Facebook wall was curiously cleared of all posts and pictures.
“No family member was informed he was travelling anywhere else but NDU, Amassoma until a policeman called us from Lagos with his phone number to come and identify his body,” she said.
When Saturday PUNCH spoke with one of Igali’s brothers, Brara, he took our correspondent through the timeline of the last time he was seen up to the point they got a call confirming his body was found.
According to him, on Thursday, May 19, Igali left their home in Yenagoa, and told his parents that he was going to get his certificate in school, which he needed for his documentation at the NYSC camp.
Brara said, “When he left home, all he said was that he was going to NDU at Amassoma to get the certificate and that he would go to Benue from there. We were hoping that by the time he finally settled in for his NYSC at Benue, he would give us a call. There was no cause for alarm when we did not hear from him days later.
“Between Thursday and Sunday May 22, we did not hear anything until we got a call from a policeman on Monday in Lagos that his body was found. The policeman contacted us through the phone found on him. We have not seen his body; that is why we don’t even know in what condition the body was found. We are still making arrangements and holding meetings before proceeding to Lagos to retrieve his body for autopsy.”
A journey from Yenagoa to Amassoma takes about 45 minutes. In addition to that, a journey from Amassoma, Bayelsa State would not have ordinarily taken him through Lagos. These are the reasons the family remain confused about how he could have ended up dead on a street corner in Lagos, a state so far out of his way.
“He did not know anybody in Lagos. At least, there is no reason whatsoever for us to believe he had any friend there whom he could have tried to visit. Right now, we are only looking up to the Nigeria Police to get to the root of the matter because we are sure he was murdered. His father and mother are in shock right now because he is their first child,” Brara said.
The police in Lagos have said they would not be able to give much information about the corps member until the family are on ground.
The Ogun State Police Command spokesperson, Mr. Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the story, explained that the body was deposited at the mortuary.
