Adeyeye seeks tennis revival in schools
Femi Makinde, Osogbo
The Senate Chief Whip, Senator Sola Adeyeye, has tasked tennis clubs in the country to ensure the revival of lawn tennis in secondary schools to enable Nigeria to produce future champions.
Adeyeye, who is the Chairman, Senate Committee on Education, said this in Osogbo on Saturday during his investiture as an honorary member of the Osogbo Tennis Club.
Other personalities conferred with the membership of the club are former Minister of Youth Affairs, Senator Akinlabi Olasunkanmi; Mr. Muyiwa Ige; former Commissioner of Police, Osun State, Kola Sodipo; Chief Bayo Adejumo and Mr. Akindele Fajemiyo.
Adeyeye advised the youths not to wait till they were over 20 years of age before they start playing tennis. He said many world champions reigned in their early 20s.
He said, “I hope this will be as influential as the Yoruba Tennis Club and the Island Club, but don’t make the same mistakes those clubs made. They made tennis to take background and they became where contracts are arranged.
“If tennis must flourish, somehow you must restore the tennis court at Ilesa Grammar School which I attended. We had such a good team, Akin Soaris, my classmate was the Western Nigerian champion.
“Western region used to dominate Nigeria tennis. May God help you to make Osogbo Grammar School and other schools to have tennis courts, so that we can produce the champions if not for the world, but for Africa.”
