AFN lists Okagbare, drops Oke for African meet

The Athletic Federation of Nigeria has named 29 athletes for  the 2016 African Senior Athletics Championships  in South Africa between June 22 and 26.

Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games double sprint gold medallist, Blessing Okagbare, topped the list, which has 18 overseas-based athletes and 11 home-based athletes.

However,   national men’s triple jump champion, Tosin Oke, was dropped alongside 2015 All Africa Games women’s 100m hurdles gold medallist, Tobi Amusan, and Brazzaville 2015 All Africa Games women’s 400m hurdles gold medallist, Amaka Ogoegbunam.

Okagbare, whose African 100m record of 10.79secs was  smashed by Ivory Coast’s Muriel Ahoure in Florida on Saturday, is  joined by  overseas-based  Gloria Asumnu, Chioma Agwunobi , Jennifer Madu, Regina George, Margaret Bamgbose, Chinwe Okoro, Nwanneka Okwelogu, Uhunoma Osazuwa, Toyin Augustus and Claire Uke.

The men are Adekunle Fasasi,  Chidi Okezie, Doreen Amata, Stephen Mozia, Miles Ukaoma, Olu Olamigoke and Paul Dedewo.

The home-based athletes are Agnes Osazuwa, Patience Okon-George, Yinka Ajayi, Omolara Omotosho, Peace Uko, Ese Brume, Ogho-Oghene Egwero, Divine Oduduru, Obina Metu, Orukpe Erayokan and Adams Samuel.

Oke, who won the African Championships in 2010 and 2014 as well as the African Games in 2011 and 2015, recently finished second at the IAAF World Challenge in Hengelo with a season’s best of 16.87m.
