Benue gov appoints acting SSG
Aviashima Toom, Makurdi
Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has appointed his Special Adviser on Economic Development, Dr. Bem Meladu, as the acting Secretary to the Benue State Government.
This is comes four days after the substantive SSG, Targema Takema, who on Thursday last week slumped allegedly due to a brain tumour.
There are speculations that Takema, who was rushed to Abuja in a NEMA air ambulance, passed on today.
The Chief Press Secretary to Ortom, Mr. Terver Akase, confirmed Meladu’s appointment by the governor.
He, however, refuted as untrue speculations that the SSG had passed on saying, he had no knowledge of such a development.
It was gathered that there is already an intense lobby for the position which is viewed as one of the most strategic in the state.
A close confidant of Senator George Akume, the APC leader in the state, said Takema before his strange illness was seen as one of the most powerful figures in the Ortom administration.
Meladu, before his new appointment had the responsibility of overseeing the Special Duties unit hitherto manned by Joe Ikyaagba, who was last Monday remanded in prison custody in connection with the assassination of the governor’s former security aide, Denen Igbana, by unknown gunmen.
