W’Bank tackles erosion in Anambra
Tony Okafor, Awka
The World Bank has intervened in four erosion sites in Anambra State.
Anambra has no fewer than 500 erosion sites.
The state Governor, Willie Obiano, stated this during the church service to mark this year’s World Environment Day held at the St. Patrick’s Catholic Cathedral, Awka, on Sunday
The governor said the World Bank’s intervention would take place in four erosion sites, including Enugwu-Ukwu, Obosi, Nkpor and Nnewi,
He said work would commence on the four locations next month.
The governor noted that his administration was able to attract the World Bank assistance due to the transparency and reforms it had entrenched.
He said with the support, the spate of erosion ravaging parts of the state would be minimised.
The Auxiliary Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Jonas-Benson Okoye, in his sermon, stressed the need for the people to complement ongoing efforts towards protecting the environment by avoiding unhealthy practices that would lead to environmental degradation, such as improper refuse disposal and termination of water, blockade of drains, burning of tyres on tarred roads, among others.
He commended the governor for promoting environmental protection through his numerous waste- to-wealth projects as well as the setting up of relevant agencies to enforce environmental and sanitation laws.
