‘Sunderland are becoming too easy to beat’ - Poyet

Sunderland manager Gus Poyet has admitted his side are becoming too easy to beat, after the Black Cats conceded their 11th defeat of the season against Tottenham on Saturday.

The Wearside outfit remain rock bottom of the Premier League after Spurs came from behind to seal a 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light, Brazilian midfielder Paulinho's strike and an own goal from John O'Shea ruling out Adam Johnson's opener.

Sunderland started brightly and netted shortly before the break, but they held onto their lead for a matter of minutes before Tottenham struck back, and following recent losses to Chelsea and Stoke, Poyet has lamented his side's inability to learn from their mistakes.

"It's becoming too easy to play against Sunderland," said the Black Cats boss.

"My job is head coach, I convince players what is the best way to play football.

"I train them, I show them, I tell them, I repeat it to them, and we keep doing it and keep doing it until it's like a hammer in your head constantly.

"If we get it before a Saturday, we have a chance, but if we don't it's going to get worse and worse, simple is that.

"I'm just being honest, and sometimes being honest doesn't mean you're being negative. I'm not, I'm just being realistic."

Sunderland may feel hard done by after a legitimate penalty appeal was waved away by officials following Spurs midfielder Sandro's blatant handball in the second-half.

A goal would have seen the Black Cats pull level, but Poyet insisted his team should not use the decision as an excuse for the defeat.

"The penalty shout is a perfect excuse to hide behind," the Uruguayan added.

"You could say that if Spurs don't score and if we get that penalty - which was clear - then maybe it would have been a different result.

"But that's not enough for me. I'm not the kind of manager that comes to you and says,'goals change games blah, blah, blah', because the second half was very poor from us.

"We made too many bad decisions, the team didn't look comfortable on the pitch, we didn't know what to do in certain situations, we didn't know how to help each other. Too many bad things.

"That's why we are where we are, we cannot blame anyone else apart from ourselves and we need to accept it."
