German envoy seeks increased funding in Nigeria

Charles Abah

THE German Consul-General in Lagos, Mr. Ingo Herbert, has urged Nigeria to invest massively in education, saying it is the elixir for development.

Herbert, who commended the high quality of education in German universities, also called for collaboration between universities and companies, especially in research and training.

The envoy stated this in Lagos at the inauguration of an education consultancy firm, SJJ Education. The firm helps students to secure admission to tertiary institutions in Germany.

Herbert, while urging Nigeria to invest in education, noted that his home country scrapped tuition in all its public universities, a development, he added, resulted in high enrolment even by foreign students.

He added, “Education in Germany is free from primary to tertiary level, and this is because of a political decision taken a few years back, and this applies to Germans and foreigners. German higher education is based on several sections, such as the classic and technical universities, which deal with engineering and technological courses and this section alone has 25 per cent of its students as foreigners.

“On the other hand, the applied science universities work closely with companies to meet their needs. In general, the German education system combines teaching and research, and quite often, these researches are funded by companies.”

SJJ Education Chairman, Mr. Saturday Jackson, said the firm was a bridge between German universities and Nigerians seeking to study in Germany.

He added, “We act as a bridge between German universities and Nigerian students by screening these candidates for these ivory towers. Our job is to package all the education needs and travel requirements for students who genuinely show interest in studying in Germany.”
