SON raids Anambra supermarkets

The Standards Organisations of Nigeria on Monday raided several supermarkets in Anambra State over substandard products.

 The agency said it discovered that some supermarkets in the state still sold expired products.

While confiscating such products, the agency gave an assurance that defaulters would be punished accordingly.

Speaking with newsmen in Awka, the state capital, the Head of the agency in Anambra State, Mr. Samuel Ayuba Ushe, said the agency had raided the Iron-rod Market Atani, near Onitsha.

He said the specimen of some rods confiscated in the market had been taken to a laboratory for quality testing.

Ushe said the visit to the Iron-rod market, Onitsha, had become necessary, following incessant building collapse in the state.

He said the agency had sealed a tyre warehouse in Onitsha for selling substandard tyres, noting that the action had become necessary to avoid further circulation of the products.

 He maintained that the agency had been carrying quality assurance inspections as routine to check companies in the state to ensure they complied with minimum standards.

Ushe decried the attitudes of some companies, which he said would bar officials of the agency from entering their premises for routine inspections.

 He added that it was difficult to penetrate the Onitsha main market because of the attitude of traders, who would want to mob SON officials.

 He expressed optimism that SON would win the war against fake and substandard products in the state, despite all odds.

  Ushe said the agency was in touch with market leaders and other stakeholders to ensure quality products in Anambra markets..
